Description

Syringa reticulata ‘Ivory Silk’ / Ivory Silk Japanese Tree Lilac

Planting Points: Known for huge, creamy-white panicles (8–12 inches long) in early summer—later than most lilacs. Panicles are fragrant, heavy, and attract pollinators. Dark, cherry‑like bark with horizontal lenticels adds winter interest. More heat and pollution tolerant than traditional lilacs, excellent for urban plantings. Very low maintenance: strong branching, minimal pruning required. Prune immediately after flowering only if shaping is needed; avoid late-season pruning. Resistant to powdery mildew, bacterial blight, and many issues common to shrub lilacs. Reliable and long-lived—one of the best tree lilacs for northern climates.

Siting This Tree: Excellent specimen tree for small to medium residential yards. Ideal near patios, walkways, and entryways where fragrance can be appreciated. Great for streetscapes, boulevards, and commercial landscapes due to durability. Works well in mixed ornamental plantings, cottage gardens, or as a small shade tree. Avoid deeply shaded or saturated sites for best performance.
