Description

Taxodium distichum / Bald Cypress

Planting Points: A deciduous conifer, meaning it drops its needles in fall after turning orange-bronze. Known for producing “knees” (woody root projections) in saturated or swampy soils; knees are far less common in dry upland conditions. Extremely tolerant of standing water, clay soils, drought, heat, and urban conditions. Fast-growing once established with a strong central leader. Very long-lived, durable, and highly resistant to pests and diseases. Forms a pyramidal shape in youth, broadening with age. Minimal pruning required; prune only to remove crossing or damaged branches. Excellent storm resistance.

Siting This Tree: Ideal for wet areas, retention basins, rain gardens, pond margins, or flood-prone soils. Performs exceptionally well in parks, golf courses, campuses, and large residential landscapes. Suitable for urban plantings, medians, and boulevards due to tolerance of poor soils and compacted conditions. Works well as a specimen tree or in groves to create a southern or “bayou” aesthetic. Avoid planting immediately beside sidewalks or driveways if growing in wet areas (knees may develop).
