Description

Betula platyphylla ‘Dakota Pinnacle’ / Dakota Pinnacle® Birch

Planting Points: Selected by NDSU for extreme cold tolerance, upright narrow form, and strong central leader. Excellent choice when space is limited—far narrower than most birch species. Clean white bark develops early and becomes more pronounced with age. More resistant to bronze birch borer than European white birch; still benefits from minimizing drought stress. Requires consistent moisture, especially during the first several years. Mulch heavily (but keep away from trunk) to keep roots cool and moist. Prune only in late summer or fall to avoid sap flow. Fast-growing but with stronger structure than many fast birches.

Siting This Tree: Ideal for northern landscapes, prairie conditions, and areas with limited horizontal space. Excellent as a vertical accent, perimeter planting, or screen. Works well near water features, open lawns, and naturalized landscapes. Perfect for entries, narrow side yards, or spots needing a tall, slender tree. Avoid hot, reflective urban sites or locations prone to extended drought.
