Description

Acer truncatum × Acer platanoides ‘Crimson Sunset’ / Crimson Sunset Maple

Planting Points: Hybrid combining the drought tolerance of a truncatum with the durability of a platanoides. More heat-tolerant than many purple-leafed maples, holding color well through summer. Moderate growth rate; develops a broadly oval to rounded canopy. Requires consistent watering during first 2–3 years; afterward, displays above-average heat and drought resilience. Minimal pruning needed shape naturally stays dense and uniform. Resistant to common maple pests; much fewer issues than Norway maple selections. Avoid waterlogged soils—ensure drainage at planting.

Siting This Tree: Great medium shade tree for suburban lots and commercial landscapes. Excellent choice where a purple foliage tree is desired without the size of a Crimson King Norway Maple. Works well as a specimen, along driveways, or in front yard plantings. Good for hotter climates, performing better than many red/purple maples. Provides season-long color contrast—pair with green foliage shrubs, conifers, and ornamental grasses. Place where the canopy can expand without obstruction—ideal for open lawns.
