Description

Carpinus caroliniana ‘JN Select A’ / Fire King Musclewood

Planting Points: A selection from Johnson’s Nursery known for exceptional fall color, superior to standard musclewood. Distinctive smooth, sinewy gray bark, giving the “musclewood” look year-round. Upright-rounded form; maintains a uniform canopy with minimal pruning. Naturally, pest- and disease-resistant; very low maintenance. Tolerates urban conditions better than many small native trees once established. Requires consistent moisture during establishment, moderate drought tolerance later. Avoid exposed, extremely dry sites—species prefers some root-zone moisture. Prune lightly in late winter if needed; tends to maintain excellent natural structure.

Siting This Tree: Excellent for residential landscapes, front yards, and tight urban or suburban planting sites. Ideal for shade gardens, woodland edges, and naturalized plantings. Perfect near patios, walkways, and entry gardens where bark and fall color can be appreciated. Works beautifully as a specimen, in small groupings, or in mixed ornamental borders. A strong alternative to Japanese maple in cold climates due to hardiness and vivid fall color.
