Description

Acer saccharum ‘Green Mountain’ / Green Mountain Sugar Maple

Planting Points: A classic sugar maple cultivar known for its vigorous growth, strong central leader, and uniform pyramidal form. Very cold-hardy, performing well in northern regions. Requires consistent moisture—does not tolerate drought or heat stress as well as hybrid maples. It should be planted in areas with good soil structure and minimal compaction. Avoid planting near roads or sidewalks where salt is used. Mulch to conserve moisture but keep mulch away from the trunk flare. Prune only lightly and during the dormant season (bleeds sap heavily in early spring). Long-lived and develops a classic sugar maple canopy with excellent storm resistance.

Siting This Tree: Excellent for large lawns, parks, and estate planting where there is room to develop. Ideal for showcasing in front yards thanks to beautiful form and fall color. Best in rural or suburban landscapes rather than tight urban sites. Plant away from compacted soil zones, pavement, or high-traffic areas. Stunning when used in rows, paired with evergreens, or placed as a single focal tree.
