Description

Acer pseudosieboldianum × palmatum ‘Hasselkus’ / Northern Glow® Maple

Planting Points: A hybrid selected by Dr. Ed Hasselkus to mimic the beauty of Japanese maple but with exceptional cold tolerance. Multi-stemmed or low-branched tree form with an upright, rounded habit. Protect from strong winter winds in extreme climates—though much hardier than Japanese maple. Requires regular watering during establishment; afterward, moderate moisture is ideal. Mulch lightly to maintain soil moisture and root temperature stability. Pruning typically minimal—maintains a naturally elegant structure. Strong four-season interest: good form, textured leaves, excellent fall color.

Siting This Tree: Ideal for northern landscapes where Japanese maples often fail to overwinter. Perfect as a focal-point specimen near patios, entries, or garden beds. Excellent for Asian-inspired gardens, woodland edges, or mixed ornamental borders. Works well in foundation plantings where space allows for its rounded spread. Best sited where the fall color can be fully appreciated—front yards, near windows, or along paths.
