Description

Nyssa sylvatica ‘Northern Splendor’ / Northern Splendor™ Black Tupelo

Planting Points: Selected for superior cold hardiness, making it a strong performer in northern climates. More upright and uniform in habit compared to wild-type Black Tupelo. Known for reliable, intense fall color, even in less-than-ideal conditions. Resistant to pests and diseases—Nyssa is considered a very “clean” landscape tree. Requires steady moisture during establishment; becomes moderately drought-tolerant once mature. Sensitive to high pH soils—prefer slightly acidic planting sites. Avoid heavy pruning; maintains a beautiful natural structure with minimal training.

Siting This Tree: Excellent specimen for lawns, parks, streetscapes, and campus landscapes. Outstanding choice where fall color is a priority, rivaling maples and sweetgum. Performs well in large residential yards where a mid-sized shade tree is needed. Great in naturalized plantings, mixed native groves, or near ponds/lakes (but not in saturated soils). Avoid compacted alkaline urban soils unless improved.
