Description
Platanus x acerifolia / London Planetree
Planting Points: Commonly called London planetree, is a hybrid cross between American sycamore (P. occidentalis) and Oriental planetree (P. orientalis). Resistant to anthracnose and frost cracking. The signature ornamental feature of this huge tree is its brown bark which exfoliates in irregular pieces to reveal creamy white inner bark. Mature trees typically display mottled white bark that facilitates identification from great distances. This tree, once mature, is the definition of statement tree with it’s combination of size and beauty.
Siting This Tree: Plants grow best in moist, deep, rich well-drained soil in full sun but does not tolerate shady sites. It is considered soil pH adaptable and moderately salt and drought tolerant. It can be a messy tree since it drops a lot of leaves, twigs, and fruit, making it less desirable for some clients or as boulevard tree.
