Description

Acer saccharum / Sugar Maple

Planting Points: Plant in spring or fall for best establishment. Requires ample rooting space—not ideal for small lots. Water deeply during the first 3–5 years; does not like prolonged drought. Mulch 2–3 inches deep, keeping mulch away from trunk flare. Do not plant in areas exposed to heavy road salt or soil compaction. Avoid pruning in early spring—sap bleed is heavy (a natural trait). Slow to moderate grower, but extremely long-lived.

Siting This Tree: Excellent as a majestic shade tree for large yards or parks. It is ideal for creating a canopy over lawns or large open spaces. Not suitable for tight urban settings or near streets due to root sensitivity and salt intolerance. Works beautifully in naturalized settings, woodland edges, or large landscape groupings. Plant where fall color can be showcased—high-impact autumn specimen. Needs space away from structures, driveways, or compacted zones to avoid stress.
