Description

Gleditsia triacanthos f. inermis ‘Shademaster’ / Shademaster® Honeylocust

Planting Points: One of the most widely used honey locust cultivars due to its graceful, spreading form and fine‑textured, dappled shade. Seedless and thornless, making it an excellent landscape tree with minimal cleanup. Rapid growth rate and strong adaptability to urban stressors: pollution, salt, drought, and compacted soils. Open canopy allows sunlight to filter through—excellent for growing turf beneath. Minimal pruning required tends to form a stable, well‑balanced crown. Resistant to major pests and diseases, including canker, pod gall, and leafhoppers. Water deeply during establishment; extremely low maintenance once rooted in. Excellent replacement for ash in regions affected by emerald ash borer.

Siting This Tree: Ideal for large lawns, parks, boulevards, and urban streetscapes. Perfect for providing light, filtered shade near patios, driveways, or open lawns. Works well in parking lot islands and commercial landscapes due to high salt and drought tolerance. Performs strongly in windy, exposed, or prairie‑style landscapes. Avoid planting in very wet or poorly drained soils.
