Description

Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’ / Worplesdon Sweetgum

Planting Points: Selected for its excellent fall color, improved hardiness, and upright yet open branching. More uniform shape and straighter central leader than the species. Less likely to drop messy, spiky gum balls than older cultivars (still may produce some fruit). Strong wood and good storm resistance. Needs consistent moisture while establishing; becomes moderately drought tolerant later. Sweetgums want acidic to neutral soil—in alkaline soils, may show chlorosis. Minimal pruning required; prune only during dormancy to avoid sap bleeding.

Siting This Tree: Excellent specimen tree for lawns, parks, and large landscapes where fall color is a priority. Works well in boulevards, campuses, or residential yards with ample space. Avoid extremely dry, windy, or highly alkaline sites. Ideal where a tall shade tree with multi‑season interest is desired.
