Description

Ulmus americana ‘Jefferson’ / Jefferson Elm

Planting Points: A highly regarded, Washington D.C.–selected American elm with strong Dutch Elm Disease (DED) resistance. Shows classic vase‑shaped American elm form—arching limbs and a high canopy. Slightly wider and more arching than ‘New Harmony’. Resistant to elm leaf beetle and shows good tolerance to elm yellows (phloem necrosis), though monitoring is still recommended. Fast-growing once established, with strong wood and excellent storm flexibility. Very tolerant of urban heat, pollution, salt, and compacted soils. Requires regular watering until established; drought-tolerant later in life. Prune only during late fall or winter to minimize disease risk and maintain vase form.

Siting This Tree: Excellent for historic elm-style streetscapes with updated disease resistance. Ideal for large residential yards, parks, campuses, boulevards, and open lawns. Not suitable for planting under power lines, this is a tall canopy tree. Performs very well in urban environments, including tough soil and heat conditions. Creates beautiful, arching shade over sidewalks and pathways.
