Description

Cercidiphyllum japonicum / Katsura Tree

Planting Points: Known for heart-shaped leaves that emerge reddish purple, turn blue green in summer, and finish with spectacular fall color. Requires consistent moisture, especially when young; mulch helps maintain root-zone coolness. Sensitive to drought—leaf scorch and early leaf drop occur without sufficient moisture. Pyramidal to broadly oval habit with graceful branching. Avoid windy, exposed, or extremely dry sites. Responds well to a protected site with morning sun and afternoon shade in hot climates. Pruning is rarely needed—forms an attractive natural shape. A long-lived tree with excellent multi-season interest.

Siting This Tree: Excellent as a specimen tree for lawns, courtyards, and prominent landscape positions. Beautiful near water features, where soil moisture remains consistent. Works well in park plantings, larger residential landscapes, and arboretum-style gardens. Ideal for woodland edges or mixed ornamental plantings. Avoid compacted soils, drought-prone areas, or reflected heat from pavement or buildings.
