Description

Acer rubrum ‘Ruby Red’ / Ruby Red Maple

Planting Points: Known for excellent red fall color and strong central leader. Faster growing than many shade trees once established. Requires consistent moisture, especially during the first 3–5 years; dislikes prolonged drought. Mulch to maintain soil moisture but keep mulch off the trunk flare. Red maples have shallow roots—avoid planting too close to sidewalks or driveways. Prune during summer or late fall to minimize sap bleeding. Avoid high‑alkaline or compacted soil areas to prevent nutrient issues.

Siting This Tree: Great as a shade tree for lawns, parks, and large residential properties. Valuable for early fall color display—ideal for focal or front‑yard use. Works well in naturalized areas, woodland edges, and along property boundaries. Avoid exposed hot/dry sites unless irrigation is available. Not recommended very close to urban pavement due to surface roots and soil compaction sensitivity. Provides strong seasonal interest with red twigs, early red flowers, and colorful samaras.
