Description
Crataegus crus-galli / Thornless Hawthorn
Planting Points: A selection of cockspur hawthorn without the long, sharp thorns—far more landscape‑friendly. Produces clusters of white spring flowers, followed by bright red berries that persist into winter. Glossy green summer foliage with good fall color. Dense, spreading, rounded crown—very tidy form with minimal pruning needed. More disease resistant than many hawthorns, though occasional leaf spot or rust can appear. Moderate growth rate; very tolerant of urban stress, wind, drought, and poor soils. Fruit is attractive to birds; mild fruit drop but generally not messy compared to crabapples. Excellent cold hardiness for northern landscapes.
Siting This Tree: Great four-season ornamental for residential yards and small to medium-sized landscapes. Excellent near patios, courtyards, and walkways when a thornless option is preferred. Works well as a small specimen tree, in pairs or rows, or mixed into shrub borders. Ideal for wildlife gardens due to heavy berry production. Tolerates urban conditions, making it suitable for streetscapes, boulevards, and commercial plantings. Avoid sites with poor drainage or areas prone to root rot.
