Description
Gymnocladus dioicus ‘UMNSynergy’ / True North™ Kentucky Coffeetree
Planting Points: True North™ is a male, seedless selection—no pods, making it cleaner than species trees. Narrower and more upright than typical coffeetrees—excellent urban form. Extremely tolerant of drought, alkaline soils, pollution, de‑icing salts, and urban stress. Coarse winter silhouette and bold branching add structural interest. Slow to leaf out in spring—normal for the species. Once established, extremely low‑maintenance and long‑lived. Pest- and disease-resistant with very few problems. Young trees can appear sparse but fill in with age—typical of the species.
Siting This Tree: Excellent for northern climates, windy sites, and exposed prairie landscapes. Ideal for boulevards, streetscapes, parks, and commercial sites due to toughness and seedless habit. Great residential choice where a narrower, tall shade tree is required. Works well in urban soils, parking lots, or sites with alkaline pH. Provides light, dappled shade—good for lawns and underplantings. Avoid poorly drained or chronically wet soils.
